Hybrid Work Options Available: Hybrid Work Options Available; This position may report in to either our Johnson City Headquarter or at our Cedar Park facility depending on home location. Travel between the two locations will periodically be required.
$87,776.00 Minimum Starting Base Pay* + KPI Bonuses + Competitive Benefits
Pay Range for System Protection Engineer: $87,776.00 - $109,720.00 midpoint
*Qualifications may warrant greater starting base pay within the full pay range. Individual base pay is determined by experience, job-related skills, and relevant education or training.
Position Summary
This position is responsible for performing routine technical work and applying established techniques to assist with the development of engineering standards, guidelines, studies, calculations, and specifications associated with power system protection.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist with maintaining and contributing to PEC’s system protection philosophy
- Act as a point of contact for PEC in the area of system protection with internal and external stakeholders
- Participate in testing transmission and distribution protection schemes; and review new installations for future projects
- Provide power system protection support and closely collaborate with other engineers in the Substation Design, Transmission Development, and Distribution Planning departments
- Assist with scoping system protection projects
- Oversee contractors and consultants performing system protection work
- Assist in performing short circuit studies and related electrical calculations under supervision, with the goal of developing proficiency in relay settings and protection system design.
- Review short circuit ratings for all PEC-owned substation equipment and ensure all ratings are above short circuit fault levels
- Assist substation electricians with troubleshooting system protection schemes
- Participate as a user of PEC’s relay database software and assist with the management of relay settings
- Ensure relay documentation and database is up-to-date and properly stored
- Review transmission relay events and provide input to other engineers
- Assist with coordinating relay settings with interconnected utilities

- Support the understanding and application of communication systems, including power line carrier and fiber optic technologies, as they relate to relay settings and protection schemes.
- Assist others with the development of transmission line relay settings for projects
- Review existing relay settings for temporary configurations and provide input
- Participate in PEC in ERCOT and NERC working groups, meetings, and workshops as appropriate
- Develop familiarity with applicable NERC standards, including multiple contingency analysis, relay loadability, and protection system coordination, to support compliance and system reliability
- Provide status updates on projects as needed
- Maintain the security of confidential information
- Stay abreast of advances in technology

Minimum Qualifications - (Education, Experience)
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering
- Engineer In Training (EIT) Certification
- Two years of directly related experience OR
- Post Graduate Engineering Degree focused on related engineering discipline and four years related experience
- Valid Driver’s License
