Hybrid Work Options Available; This position may report in to either our Johnson City Headquarter or our Transmission Offices in Leander, TX depending on home location. Travel between the two locations will periodically be required
$141,040.00 Minimum Starting Base Pay* + KPI Bonuses + Competitive Benefits
*Qualifications may warrant greater starting base pay within the full pay range. Individual base pay is determined by experience, job-related skills, and relevant education or training.
Position Summary
This position is responsible for overseeing the design, implementation, and maintenance of protective relay systems and equipment to ensure the reliable and safe operation of electrical power systems. They develop protection schemes, analyze system faults, coordinate system protection settings, and provide technical support to ensure the integrity and security of the power grid. Additionally, they lead a team of protection engineers and technicians to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain PEC’s system protection philosophy
- Provide technical leadership in system protection, including fault studies, relay coordination, and event analysis
- Develop and implement system protection policies, procedures, and best practices to enhance grid reliability and security
- Provide reports and analysis to management in matters of system protection and regulatory compliance
- Serve as the main point-of-contact for PEC in system protection with internal and external stakeholders, including industry working groups
- Oversee the development of transmission and distribution protection schemes and designs
- Collaborate with internal departments, including operations, maintenance, planning, and substation engineering to support system protection initiatives
- Provide input to the development of protection system designs for substation projects
- Scope projects and provide cost estimates and project justifications
- Oversee contractors and consultants performing system protection work
- Develop annual short circuit assessment for Transmission Planning
- Facilitate short circuit studies for large-load and generator interconnects
- Oversee the organization and implementation of PEC’s relay database software
- Analyze transmission relay events and provide a written report documenting findings

- Coordinate relay settings with interconnected utilities
- Develop transmission line relay settings for projects using software assisted tools and peer review settings calculated by other engineers
- Operate as the subject matter expert for all applicable NERC requirements and ensure satisfactory compliance and documentation
- Provide training and mentorship to system protection engineers and technicians
- Develop and manage department budget
- Maintain the security of confidential information
- Stay abreast of advances in technology
- Demonstrate regular and prompt attendance

- Knowledge of system protection principles and practices
- Knowledge of digital relays and communications schemes
- Knowledge of applicable NERC standards
- Knowledge of business and management principles including strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership techniques and budgeting
- Knowledge of using computer systems, which may include setting up and using hardware and software programs, error checking, database design, entering data or processing information
- Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service
- Skilled in monitoring and managing performance
- Skilled in establishing and communicating performance expectations and metrics

- Skilled in anticipating, identifying, analyzing and resolving conflict and problems
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing

Minimum Qualifications - (Education, Experience)
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering
- Ten years of directly related work experience
- Directly related experience may substitute for education
- Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Texas
- Valid Texas Driver’s License
